Sienna Spiro has released her debut album 'Visitor'. The long-awaited release from this striking phenomenon is a high-concept and utterly elegant collision of opulent soul and symphonic pop, exploring the inherent fragility of life and love.
A testament to the power of Sienna's timeless songwriting and stunning voice, all three previously released singles from the 10-song LP simultaneously charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Along with the album release, he presents the new single "Great Expectation", with an elegant and dignified video co-directed by Sienna Spiro and Miriam Maslin.
A melancholic soul-pop track with a soaring chorus and orchestral details, "Great Expectation" plays directly to the themes of "Visitor": personal resilience in the face of abandonment, and the video plays with the song's timeless sound through a vintage variety show setting.
"'Great Expectation' is about a period when I was living in New York for a while and I was talking to a person who kept saying he was coming to see me," Sienna says of the new single. "Every morning I would come down the stairs of the building and, for a moment, honestly believe that he would be outside waiting for me. Then I would walk down the street for the next five minutes imagining what I would say, what it would look like, what would happen if that person was really there. He never came.
The song became less about the person and more about the expectation itself. About whether it was beautiful or just a way to prepare yourself for disappointment. I wrote this song knowing deep down that he would never be what I want is that living with the idea of him was safer than having nothing."
Disarmingly honest and stunningly beautiful, Visitor was executive produced by Omer Fedi, known for his work with Sam Smith and SZA, with additional production from an elite crew of collaborators including Blake Slatkin, Yakob and Michael Pollack, as well as orchestral composers such as Larry Gold, known for his work with Al Green and Silk Sonic, and Academy Award winner Peter Rotter. Sienna and her handpicked collaborators have brought her vision to life in a series of warm, iconic spaces such as Electric Lady Studios in New York, Abbey Road Studios in London and Valentine Recording Studios in Los Angeles.
In beautiful contrast to Visitor's underlying theme of transience and emotional exile, the result is a richly defined yet understated soundscape that feels fully lived in, constantly tempering its grandiosity with an unsullied intimacy that perfectly complements Sienna's introspective songwriting and the raw impact of her powerful vocals.
Sienna Spiro has said of her debut album: "I've always had a strong sense of transience; I'm very afraid of endings and people leaving. It's so intense that I often don't get into new relationships or anything that I know won't last, so in a way I've spent most of my life feeling like a visitor - like someone who's just passing through. Working on this album really taught me to enjoy things in the moment instead of constantly worrying about the future. When people hear record, I hope it helps them find comfort in the fact that everything is temporary. We don't always have to rush to let things go, we can let them mean something to us without needing them to last."
The album "Visitor", released on Capitol Records (Universal Music Group), is available in standard and deluxe versions. The deluxe edition expands the tracklist to 15 tracks, including "Maybe," a fan favorite from her EP "SINK NOW, SWIM LATER," her signature track "Material Lover" for The Devil Wears Prada 2 soundtrack, an acoustic version of the smash hit "Die On This Hill," and more.
In celebration of the album's release, Sienna returns to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, July 13. Her January appearance on the show was a turning point in her breakthrough into the American market, when she performed "Die On This Hill" to a standing ovation.
