In memoriam: Mišo Kovač, the voice that defined generations, has passed away

The legendary Croatian singer has died at the age of 85, leaving behind a musical legacy deeply rooted in the collective memory of generations.

Mate Mišo Kovač, one of Croatia's most beloved and influential popular music singers, has passed away. Born on 16 July 1941 in Šibenik, he built a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, becoming a musical icon whose songs reached far beyond generations, musical tastes and borders.

His unmistakable voice and distinctive way of interpreting a song defined an entire musical era. Classics such as “Ostala si uvijek ista”, “Poljubi zemlju”, “Ako me ostaviš”, “Dalmacija u mom oku”, “Svi pjevaju, ja ne čujem” and “Najljepše su oči moje majke” became much more than hits. They became part of Croatia's musical heritage and the lives of the people who grew up with them.

With more than thirty albums to his name, Mišo maintained an extraordinary connection with his audience throughout his career. He shared a particularly strong bond with his hometown of Šibenik, Dalmatia and football club Hajduk Split. His concerts were famous for the moments when thousands of people would sing along, while Mišo, with his arms raised, let the audience take over the song.

A recipient of the Porin Lifetime Achievement Award, Mišo Kovač leaves an indelible mark on Croatian music. His passing closes an important chapter in its history, but the songs he gave us will continue to live on, as will the unmistakable voice that needs only a few notes to be recognised.

Rest in peace, Mišo.
