Exhibition: Reggae Through History

Saturday, October 10 / 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Suputnici Gallery / Nova Ves 73A, Zagreb

When the first reggae rhythms emerged in Jamaica in the late 1960s, the evolution of the sound began. While Bob Marley popularized it as music synonymous with revolution and raising awareness, reggae has since branched out as a genre, directly influencing the development of various musical styles—such as electronic music, hip hop, and punk rock—and spawning distinct sub-genres like dub, dancehall, reggaeton, and even modern-day Afrobeats, all alongside the essential sound system culture.

Precisely because of this broad cultural and musical influence, UNESCO inscribed reggae on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018.

We invite you to spend Saturday, October 10th, exploring reggae music at the Suputnici Gallery. There, we will showcase works by our artists, the extensive archive of the *Reggae.hr* portal, and various memorabilia from local reggae performers and enthusiasts of Caribbean sounds.

Exhibitors:

Stefan Černi (aka Steppaaart) is a self-taught illustrator from Pula who also creates event posters and visual designs for various reggae albums. Through his illustrations, he is recognized as a key figure—if not the pioneer—of the reggae revival movement in Croatia.

Marko Pinjuh Pipo is an illustrator and musician who balances two seemingly distant worlds: children's literature and the dub-reggae underground. While he spends his days creating worlds for the youngest audiences through children's book illustrations, his passion for reggae music has resulted in a series of posters for the Masters and Attack clubs, as well as the Escape the City festival. His artistic signature is deeply infused with the musical experience he gained playing in bands such as Brain Holidays, ST!llness, Bamwise, and I-tal Jam.

This is a charity exhibition. Prints of all works by Steppaaart and Marko Pinjuh will be available for purchase on-site, and all proceeds will be donated to charity.
An exhibition about reggae music would feel incredibly empty without a soundtrack; therefore, the musical lineup features the distinctive duo Anja G & DR.Obi, as well as Little Vex, who will treat us to acoustic renditions of reggae hits. Jan Becele will step in as a true master of the craft, alongside Hvala Sven, representing the new generation of roots pioneers.
Exhibition curators: Ivana Tolić (Reggae hr) & Tena Starčević (One Dread, BeetanTone)

Visual artist: Goran Den Popović (Reggae hr, POP&POP)
